How to Create AI-Powered Visual Novels (No Art Skills Required)
FictionMaker's Visual Novel mode generates scene backgrounds, character sprites, and styled dialogue as you write. Here's how to use it.
Visual novels combine the depth of written fiction with the immersion of visual storytelling. Traditionally, creating one required an artist, a programmer, and months of work. FictionMaker's Visual Novel mode lets you create one as you write — the AI generates scene images, character portraits, and styled dialogue boxes automatically.
What Is Visual Novel Mode?
When you toggle Visual Novel mode on a story, each paragraph becomes a visual scene. The AI:
1. Analyzes each paragraph to identify the setting, characters present, and emotional tone
2. Generates a scene background that matches the described environment
3. Places character sprites with appropriate expressions
4. Styles the dialogue in visual-novel-style text boxes
Readers can then step through your story scene by scene, like a traditional visual novel, or read it as plain text with illustrations.
Getting Started
When creating a new story on FictionMaker, check "Enable Visual Novel mode" and choose a visual style:
- Visual Novel — Anime-style scenes with character sprites and dialogue boxes. The classic VN look.
- Illustrated — 1–3 key images per chapter. Less visual-novel, more illustrated book. Good for literary fiction.
- Manga — Black and white panel layouts. Great for action and drama.
- Comic — Full-color panels. Good for superhero, adventure, and humor.
- Erotic VN — Adult visual content (18+, Writer Pro tier). Uncensored scene generation.
Tips for Better Visual Novels
Be specific about settings. "A room" generates a generic room. "A cramped Tokyo apartment at 2 AM, blue light from a computer screen, takeout containers on the desk" generates something with atmosphere.
Link your characters. If you've built characters in the Character Builder with AI-generated portraits, link them to your story. The AI uses their reference portraits to maintain visual consistency across scenes — the same character looks the same throughout.
Use scene breaks deliberately. Every paragraph generates a new scene image. If you want a dramatic reveal, put it in its own short paragraph. If you want a conversation to flow, keep it in one paragraph so the background stays consistent.
Regenerate when needed. Not every generated image will be perfect. Each scene has a regenerate button. The AI uses the same prompt with different generation parameters, so you'll get variations until one fits.
The Reader Experience
Readers see a toggle to switch between text and visual novel mode. In VN mode, they step through scenes with click/tap navigation. On desktop, images appear in a sidebar gallery with lightbox expand. On mobile, scenes appear as a full-screen overlay.
This means the same story works for readers who prefer text AND readers who prefer visual. You write once, and FictionMaker generates both experiences.
Who Is This For?
Visual Novel mode is perfect for:
- Romance writers who want readers to see their characters
- Fantasy/sci-fi writers building visual worlds
- Interactive fiction fans who want a more immersive experience
- Anyone curious about visual novels but without art skills or budget
The feature is available on Writer tier ($12.99/month) and above. Erotic VN mode requires Writer Pro ($24.99/month).
Visual novels are one of the fastest-growing fiction formats globally. With AI-generated art, the barrier to entry just disappeared.
